Matthew Stiff is Data Services Unit Manager
at the National Monuments Record Centre (English Heritage). He
read English at Manchester University and has a doctorate in Archaeology
from Oxford University and a diploma in Museum Studies from Leicester
University. Before embarking on his doctoral research he worked
as a systems analyst for Ford Credit.
Having worked in museums he joined MDA
(formerly the Museum Documentation Association) in 1997, working
as Head of Standards from 1999 to 2001. As head of the Standards
Team at MDA he was responsible for the continuing development of
SPECTRUM, the UK Museum Documentation Standard, and the SPECTRUM
XML DTD. He was also lead contact in MDA for the European Museums
Information Institute (EMII). In 1998 he helped to establish the
24 Hour Museum (www.24hourmuseum.org.uk) and was the Executive
Committee member responsible for technical project management until
March 2000.
As manager of the Data Services Unit at
the National Monuments Record he oversees the work of teams dealing
with data standards, geographic information systems, heritage information
partnerships, training and communications. He is chair of the Data
Standards Working Group of CIDOC and sits on a number of national
and international committees dealing with cultural and educational
information standards. He has worked on the CIDOC Conceptual Reference
Model since February 1997. He has published widely on documentation
and knowledge management, as well as the management of ICT projects
in the cultural sector. |
